Dashboard warning lights: which ones mean stop now

Modern cars have dozens of warning lights. Most are amber, which means “get it checked soon”. A red light usually means stop as soon as it is safe.

Stop as soon as it is safe

  • Red oil pressure light
  • Red temperature light or steam from the bonnet
  • Red brake warning light
  • Red battery light with the steering getting heavy

Book a check soon

  • Amber engine management light
  • Tyre pressure warning
  • ABS or traction control light
  • Service reminder

A flashing engine light is more serious than a steady one: it often means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.
